The Vanagon front heater core and dash fan motor are compatible in all watercooled years from 82 on. The cores are expensive for what they are.

The 82 diesel heater box is a bit of a POS and replacing it with one from 83-86 is an upgrade IMHO. Just buy a used one complete, with cables and lever assembly still connected, goes right into an 82. Use the later lever bezel also so you know how to work the improved controls.
