Other people have answered the question of what's wrong.  I just wanted to
point out that, although your situation is certainly not normal, some short
running with the key out does not indicate a problem.  So, when you have
your relay or switch replaced, don't think its still broke if the fan
sometimes is on a bit with the key off.
