Since the mouse in the wheel (aka my brain) is currently very focused on the rain water coming through my kitchen ceiling, I'm not going to suggest what one might choose to do with their Vanagon wiring. But...... As was suggested to me by another lister, I see in Bentley that the 1.9 wiring to junction post "21", is different than the 2.1 If anyone is curious of all this, would suggest searching David Beierl's posts for more info.
