Jim Akiba of Bostig fame posted a video of the late and great Boston Bob showing crankshaft end play check adjust etc.

I don't see it on thesamba.com but maybe the link in the Vanagon archives is still active? Maybe visuals to provide ideas? (let alone the great info he imparts)

My guess is that a dial indicator secured to a clean flat spot on engine case flange should suffice.

I find google images useful for getting ideas. There are two bolt holes on upper portion of engine mounting flange. Bolt indicator there? Or....

This may sound trail park-ish, but what about C clamping a dial indicator like this:

to the engine case flange? Or is there a risk of cracking the case flange?
