Since you have the 1.9 fuel injection system, with closed throttle the engine, when warm and running in closed loop mode (O2 sensor control) the fuel injectors should actually be shutting off at ~1,350 rpm. This is what causes that idle "surge" that often occurs on these engines. So for starters you either have a temp 2 sensor problem and/or the throttle is not closing completely or the switch is bad. There is a common mistake made on the these engines swapping the connectors for the throttle switch and the auxiliary air regulator. As the 12 volts will be applied without any fuse protection the switch will be instantly destroyed and usually the heater in the aux air regulator will trick the ECU into thinking the switch is always closed and make an idle surge. An easy test is to check voltages at the connectors. The 5 volt plug goes the switch and the 12 volts goes to the aux air regulator.

Hi to all,

This is a ‘85 camper with 2.1 engine.

I can’t think of a reason why the idle goes to 1,800 when I put the selector into Park. Yet it idles fine in Drive. But I must say, it takes awhile to reach that high from cold. In fact it often dies when I start out cold.

There maybe one of you who may know this.

Best wishes, Zoltan
