Yep, I are one. It was a great driver though! Had it for three years and
put over $3000 into for mostly "routine" stuff (wires, coil pack, shocks,
brakes, filters, A/T service, failed plastic coolant line connectors that
stranded me, etc.), and then the tranny started to act weird and I sold it.
I can put a 2.2 Subaru into my '85 for about what the transmission was going
to cost me on the EVC ($4000-$4500).
The Westy layout is much, much better, and we are happy campers again now.

If the Vanagon frustrates you the Eurovan will probably kill you. While the
frequency of repairs of a 22+ year vehicle can be a bear consider yourself
blessed that you can do these yourself and that parts are available. Except
for the real early one owned by folks with skills, patience, and a place to
work these are vehicles best enjoyed while under warranty or extended
service contracts. They don't need age for the Audi inspired (how thin can
you make those wires?) electrics to make themselves known and transmission
day is extremely painful. You still get to struggle for tire choices. When
they get sick you'll wish for a BOAT as you Break Out Another Thousand! I
know folks that enjoy these things for all the improvements over the Vanagon
and I also know many that have gone back.

I found the answer to my 2nd question already on Wikipedia: "The U.S.
market does not receive the T5 Transporter range due to it being classed as
a light truck, which thereby automatically includes a 25% extra tax (known
as the chicken tax <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax>) on
importation into the US. The passenger vans were the worst selling vans in
the North American market in 2003, when VW North America sold the last
Eurovans in the United States." Darn chicken tax!!! Y'all know darn well
Perdue's don't like chicken taxes . . .
