RE: Downshifting the Automatic On Passes I'll second Karl's comments about using lower gears on the automatic. Even though the automatic will downshift to 2nd on it's own I encourage drivers to dop that themselves when needed. My guidelines have evolved to this. When I see my speed slow to 40 mph I downshift to second. Then I watch the tach and speedo. I keep the revs to no more than about 4,100, speed to 48-49 mph max in second. This is far short of redline and comfortble. On one FS road I used to travel a lot I'd spend a lot of time in 1st gear and then I really watched the tach. Take your time, watch the instruments (no, you don't get to enjoy the view, your driving!) and be patient. |
