We actually stayed in Massena on our way down (the first night in a motel). I'll keep that campground in mind for next year though, thanks for the tip Stephen.

That drive would likely have taken you near Massena NY and we found an interesting campground near there on one of our trips.  Robert Moses State Park is adjacent to the Roosevelt Lock, and you must drive UNDER the lock in order to reach the park and campground.  Quite a sight to wake up and see huge lake boats heading into the lock or emerging from it.  Tours of the lock are available, I think.
