Subject: Trip Report: Mustang Island SP
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

This weekend marked the first real camping weekend powered by the Bostig, and longest trip on the new transmission from AA Transaxle. We'd done various longish drives, but no overnights thus far. Olly's maiden voyage was a reassuring success.

The destination was Mustang Island State Park, just up the coast from Corpus Christi. It's a nice section of undeveloped coast, although as far as campgrounds go, it leaves a little to be desired. The campground itself is a long wide stretch of pavement, with gravel campsite bays on either side. Each site has a sheltered picnic table, but there's not a lot of space separating the sites. I'd hate to be there in the summer high season, but on this fall weekend the campground was probably about 2/3 full, which left some comfortable breathing room. Also of note is that these were the most level campsites I've ever stayed at in my life, which of course, is always a pleasant surprise. And of course the sunrises are glorious.

The van performed wonderfully on both the 180 mile drive down and back. On the outbound voyage we cruised along at 70 mph, destroying hundreds of butterflies which were also passing through the area. The windshield looked like a Jackson Pollock painting by the time we reached Corpus. Passing pokey trucks on the two lane state highways was no problem either, and caused Melina no end of amazement. "I can't believe you're passing other cars in Olly. That is so cool," she kept saying. Indeed. Quite cool. We got 18.3mpg on the way down according to Fuelly.com.

On the return we took it a bit easier, keeping to around 65 mph. Still made good time, but don't know what the return trip mileage was yet, as I haven't fueled up yet.

Got back and cleaned the sand out of the van and the bugs off the grill. Olly's ready for another trip. I of course, confident in the new drivetrain, have turned my thoughts to power systems, Truckfridges, side tents, and reading lights.

Sigh.

A vanagonauts' work is never done.
