Hi, How many miles on this transaxle ? Noise changing on/off the power in gear ... points to the trans. If it's very high miles and making noise ... it's better to not keep driving it a lot. If you drive it long enough, it won't be a good core for rebuilding.

you could run it in the air and listen for noise at the differential area, and rear wheel bearings. Like 35mph in 2nd gear. Has to be really, really solidly supported, the van, of course.

with either a listening tube or listening stick, or stethoscope.

You can check for up-down play at the output flanges ..where the inner CV joints are. There shouldn't be any. If there is some play there ..usually it just means high miles. If it leaks at a flange seal .. so far in my experience...once that happens ...and miles are really high, and the trans is noisy, and it's due to be rebuiltor replaced.

if you wanted to inspect something ...terrible amount of work . And once the bell housing is removed, you can see the ring and pinion gears. .. and get a little 'feel' on the side gear bearings. If there's any pitting or dings in either the ring gear or pinion gear .. it's not even a good core for rebuilding.

there's nota lot you can do to them, unless you are going to really take it apart completely and rebuild it.
