Reading Jeff's thoughts and recollections, I must say, I had the exact same experience with Bob. And I have always thought of him warmly with respect. He may not carry on giving us his best anymore, but his greatness did not leave us. His example of how to treat a person, his patience, kindness has rubbed off on us all. I still see him in my mind, at one of the Vanagon-get-togethers, sitting in the door way of his van, thinner than he probably used to be, having a medical band on his left wrist, gently smiling. He never left his lifelong love; the VW Engine, and all that comes with it. I guess, we are a little bit like him too. Best wishes to all, Zoltan

I never had one of his engines either - although I wanted one :)

My only contact with Bob was many years ago when I was having some issues with the oil warning buzzer going off on my '90 2.1L. Someone gave me his number and told me to call him. I was a bit apprehensive because he didn't know me and to call out of the blue - well I didn't want to intrude on the guy. I did however want my issue fixed and so I called. What a great guy! He gave me some great detailed advice that helped me fix the problem and we had about an hour long conversation on top of that. The man treated me like we had been friends for years - that was only one interaction with the man but it said a lot in my book about the kind of person he was.

I remember how saddened I was to learn of his passing. His death was a great loss to our vanagon/bus community - more so however it was a great loss of a good soul. I know this post is a couple of days old now but my thoughts will be with his family and close friends today.

-- Thanks,

Jeff '85 GL (Gertie) '78 Bus (Melissa) Patty's Bus
