The efficiency thing can become addictive like a drug. Unfortunately after a major gain continued improvements have small returns on investment. They also cost in ways that have to be learned by experience and then ways that one will never realize.

So here is how things often go down. You did the gear change. Say you got 20%. What will be the real mileage doing real highway speeds of 65-70 if you can? You go for the turbo or maybe even the 1.9 with some turbo option. Power and economy. You want even more of both start tweaking the turbo. Next lets go for injector timing. Maybe even different injectors. Re-gear it some more. Feels really good. Getting great economy. Go on trips, wow. Blow it up! Tow it home from far away. Make excuses why it blew. Rebuild-repair. Do last 4 lines every 20-60K. Sell it as "special Diesel Conversion".

Sorry I know it is not Friday. Dennis

I cant remember/misplaced the diesel spec sheet for bore and stroke, but wondering if the 1.9 ha a longer stroke? Breaks down to 75cc per cylinder increase. I don't want to be one of those hot rod diesel guys, just want to make it the most efficient it can be with small power gains.

Ralph, my friend, you are trying to get blood out of a turnip. Put up with it for the mileage, or put a different engine in it for power. Diesel engines are hammered with high compression, add a turbo to this engine and you'll be lucky to get 1000 miles out of it before it self destructs.

Just my $0.02.

Stuart '85 Westy, and I want more power too.
