I'm planning the same thing someday, but going the Subaru route. A Subie would be a good conversion for a diesel too, or the Bostig.

Im in the bluffs just east of the missouri river valley and have a variety of hills some steep and windy and some not so much. I keep an eye open for river grade routes to help maintain speed if possible. After further upgrades we plan on touring the wonderful sights of the USA,trying to plan ahead!

Ralph, you are a flatlander, and you have probably reached the point of maximum efficiency. How often to you even see a hill of any significance in your travels? If you really want more power, do a swap. It will be far more cost effective!

Driving an automatic with a worn out engine I feel your pain, and there are a lot of hills around here! All but the steepest I can pull at 4500 rpm @ 45 mph in second. Mileage is around 15 mpg though.

I plan on keeping to hwy speeds 60-65 and avoid interstate travel due to not much to see other than open space and truckstops. I know there's a limit to efficiency/ power! If I want anymore power it'll take more fuel after I reach the efficiency balance.
