no engine isn't that big a problemreally.

now getting a GOOD used engine ...that's harder. I have several 2.1's.. if I wanted to I could say this one from a 90 Syncro Westy 'runs fine' .. and it does. I also know the miles are something like 220K on it and the bearing clearances are on the high side.

about checking engines.. the 'sealing' ..the compression they can make is only one inidcation. it's the crankshaft bearing clearances thatare the limiting factorreally.

once the thing has lowish OP ... you can't really count on the ...especially 2.1's.

I have ..let's see.. about 7 1.9 wbxr engines ... short blocks, short blocks with heads .. fully assembled still running ... the 85 1.9 wbxr might be a tiny bit better made than 83 o4 84 ones.. the have a couple of bigger case half studs .. got one of those ..total miles are about 180 K .. runs fine ..just has a piston slap/knock in it- from someone reving it immediately every time they fired it up I suspect.

I have a 2.1 case that's pitted at the water pump face.. that crank and rods could go into one of my many 1.9 cases to make 2.1

anytime I have a really decent used wbxr engine .. I save it to put in a good van to sell the whole van. I never part out any vans unless they are burnt or crashed or rusted badly. but cores to build things from .. got tons of that stuff. I don't throw away any vanagon part ever.

and half the time people wait until their old 1.9 or 2.1 wbxr is tired before they do a subaru or whatever conversion .. so 'sometimes' that's a source of good used waterboxers ...but not always.

It DOES have Wolfsburg Edition badges on the front fenders, it has a gray dashboard, fold out bed and two jump seats plus the fold out table. Power windows, mirrors, etc. Nice looking up holstery, don't know how to describe, kind of a slash cut pattern. Question is, is it really a Blue Star? It is a beautiful van and I'd love to have it, but seller is asking what I'd call a premium price based on the belief it is a Blue Star.
