Yeah,... will just work up a diesel vanagon starter powered by compressed air .. pump a while to build up air pressure .. fire it off. Just need to change the fuel shut off solenoid to something non-electrical.

convert from alternator with diodes in it to a good ole generator. that should giverunning lights with no solid state devices involved.

also ..for gasoline.. magneto igntion. Purely magnets and metal I believe ..nothing solid state. Early aircraft are like that.. unground mag so there's ignition, spin prop by hand. you're running . No battery, noelectronics etc.

if you push start a diesel vanagon ... the 'one thing' it needs to run is the fuel shut-off solenoid needs to be re-done so no electricity is needed... After that..all major mechanical systems are purely mechanical.

as is the case, come to think of it, on early diesel Benz's.. they had a pull knob that turned on fuel I believe.. further pulling made a switch contact to energize the glow plugs.

And oddly ...up until 1975 ..on a 220D ...there are 5 glow plugs in series .. 4 in the engine, one in the dash ...when you see that dash thing glowingas you hold the knob pulled out against spring pressure you know the engine glow plugs are glowing too. So crude .. no electronics though.
