I learned from Tim Hannink that the two AC switches in the over head above the dash are imminently cleanable and reparable should one give trouble. When visiting here, he helped me with my AC and took those switches completely apart, cleaned them, checked their operation electrically with a meter, re-assembled and re-installed them for me. I have long considered the Vanagon to be one of the easiest vehicles around for the home mechanic to work on - and a shop mechanic for that matter - but I had no idea at all that those switches were designed like the rest of the Vanagon - specifically for ease of maintenance. But it is do-able on those switches also.
