Jim, those black ones are the only ones available now, the chrome ones are NLA. (BTW, we all need to bug VW Classic Parts to bring this part back.) They have glue imbedded in them so just push them on using a small rubber mallet. Painting them, I guess it could be done, they are plastic and there's an abundance of rattle can paints for painting plastics. If you want chrome ones then go to Go Westy, they have a trim strip that is similar and looks good. I don't know where they got it so I bought a roll of it a while back from them and have used it on many customers vans and it really looks good, almost like the original version.
