My van came without the proper bulb holder, just a small incandescent light taped to the shifter shaft. I replaced it with a couple of red LEDs years ago, and haven't looked back since.

If you want to knock up your own set of LEDs, check out http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz to figure out what resistors you'll need.
