Finally managed to get out on the road a little, and realized something that was staring me in the face: The coasting rpm is based strictly on road speed, while the driving rpm is based on load and therefor differs for the same road speed depending on conditions. With that knowledge and a hill or two I should be able to characterize the coasting behavior of this thing over the next little while. I'll post whatever numbers I've collected from my own and others. If you're not on the Vanagon list you won't know that Dennis Haynes immediately reassured me that what I was experiencing was normal; the transmission doesn't have any sort of freewheel capability so it's all up to torque converter behavior. Still, I'm interested to put some numbers on it. Yours, David |
