The Early Rabbit Diesel automatic had a feature known as E-Mode. Between Drive and Neutral was this setting. Lift your foot off the throttle and the tranny would disengage so you could coast. Also made idling easy as the tranny would stay in neutral until you applied throttle. I'll bet that if we installed that valve body and shift detent in the Vanagon automatic it would work.
