I love these stories! Years ago I was with friends in a fibreglass body vw dunebuggy tearing around Saddleback "mountain" in Southern California. The clutch cable snapped so we poked a hole in the body behind the driver's seat, threaded the frayed cable through the hole, wrapped it around a stout stick and one guy pulled the cable (not an easy thing to do) when the driver needed to shift. Another time, in a '70 VW bus my dad had converted into a class B motorhome (whole 'nother story) the accelerator cable broke somewhere around Denali in Alaska.
