Funny you should mention this Alistair as I've just been reading *Gus Wilson's Model Garage*, originally published in 1952. My paperback, picked up at an estate sale, is dated 1963. *http://www.gus-stories.org/cover_Paperback_1.htm* I love these classic stories about a time when cars (and maybe life in general) were much simpler.
