Another option, if you have tires you are not that committed to, is to ask your tire shop to take them in trade and get what you need and want. Discount Tire here gave me $20 apiece for the Cooper tires (maybe they were 8.50x14) that were on my camper when I bought it. They had a little over half the tread left.

Shaving tires sounds to me like just throwing away rubber, but what do I know? mcneely
