The "real life" example the article gave was kind of lame in the sense that the guy living in the RV wasn't really ina van. And he admitted that he was on land that was free which most van dwellers are not going to have access to. The other part was that he had a network of family connections so he really wasn't on his own. I'm not saying it wasn't a bit rough but he wasn't totally out their hunting for places to stay with the constant worry of being found out and interrupted by the police and such. That is one of the big issues with living in a van. I'm sure there are many exceptions but that is typical for what I've read and gleaned from the internet.

As for the hygene part, I don't think it's all that hard to stay clean. It's just a matter of adapting to a different way of doing it than just jumping into a shower. You can pretty much sponge bath yourself in the van or in a restroom. And to wash your scalp you can use a restroom sink and a liter bottle of water and some shampoo. It doesn't take long at all. If you're going to be squimish then van living isn't for you....
