Scott ; you've made this endorsement before. between then and now I've followed your practical, common sense responses to other issues. you've offered up shortcuts from real time/world experience that Bentley doesn't include. so - I trust you to the point where I spent $14 for a 3 oz tube of P/N 00295-00103 TOYOTA SEAL PACKING 103 (FIPG) For Oil Pan/Camshaft Housing For Professional Use. I'll put it to use on the water pump on my Audi until the Van comes up with a reason. package also reads `*Hardens to become rubberlike in 15 to 16 hours.' did I also stumble onto an electrical boot repair/fabricate materiel ?             thanks,    mike

If o-rings work so well ..
why did the poster write :
"but the O-ring had become hard and lost its seal over the years."

why do many modern toyota's mount their water pump bare to the block ..?
( except for their good black sealant  being used there )
............because it flat works,.

details in workmanship.
Just putting the part on is incidental to the actual process of doing a
repair that lasts really well.
