Most of the vanagons I see are pretty corrodded on the transmission..
often on the starter like this ..
always on the exhaust system ..
and I don't even live in a corrosion-prone area.
if nothing else ..spray some oily type lube on those dry rusty spots ..
corrosion is so easy to notice and stop.
I'm sure I see under them more often than most people ..
and rust and corrosion are just a shame because they are so easy to
treat and stop.
you will never find one of my own vans, or project vans for sale with
much corrosion on it ..
generally I paint all rear drums in high temp black stove paint ..
I paint wheel mounting flanges, front hubs ...
backing plates ....and all exhaust systems I touch.
it's amazing how well they'll stay light gray when painted with Flame
Proof spray exhaust paint in a can ..first the primer then the final coat.
Rust is really easy to prevent. Ya gotta see it first though ..
and you can see the top of the trans or the starter pretty easily from
the engine compartment of a vanagon.
it's just so easy to treat and prevent .
Granted in a really harsh environment it's much more difficult to stop
corrosion on vanagons .
still, almost any effort helps.
