You could remove that start signal connection from the ECU easily enough as a test to see if the starter then cranks. On the forward edge of the engine compartment double relay box is a 2 wire connector. One of the 2 wires is that starter 50 signal and that is where it joins the FI harness. Simply unplug that 2 wire connector and try the starter. The engine won't actually start up of course since the other wire of the 2 is power for the ECU etc.
