Neli,

first off, the U-joint used in the stock propshaft is quite rare over here, so some sort of knowledge is needed to find a suitable substitute. So I would guess that when u-joints wear out, many syncro owners choose to shaft replacement over u-joint work. Err, what I am trying to say is that owner replacement of joints may be not as common as you think.

That given, if you did want to replace the u-joint (ie Precision brand, part #813), and you did wail on it with the BFH rather than pressing joint out, then you surely can damage the ears of the yoke. I can imagine hammer blows peening the edges of the holes on the ears - that would make installation of new joints more difficult.

One would hope (ha!) that one would have the propshaft balanced after such treatment.

One thing though - my original porpshaft was abused by PO in that he did not replace a failing u-joint. The joint hammered itself hard and long enough to make dents on the surface of the male part of the bearing surface of the joint, AND, that hammering resulted in that particular yoke ear loosing tolerance so that a new bearing cup is looser than a press fit now.

cheers

alistair
