There is that in what you say. Are they really $3 each in sets? Ouch. Mechanically I don't think it's a good solution though, because those thin tabs aren't meant to have their stress concentrated on a little hole in the middle (not to mention the difficulty when your hammer-driven knife fails to follow the weld line).
