Hi Neil.. I happen to have a couple of stock DV 1.6 NA exhaust systems that have a flex pipe in the header pipe, fwiw.

so at some point, 'someone' ...aftermarket manufacturerof VW did have a DV exhaust with a flex section in it.

personally ..I have never had the need to put one in any vanagon engine conversion exhaust system. I 'could' ..even been saving a nice large diameter one for years. .. just never had the need.

Ilike it 'all' mounted to the engine .. with proper support and all that ..whether subaru, TD . whatever.

1.9 TD inline four engines vibrate 'nicely '.. I haven't found the need on those , for example.

re crack-prevention .. subauru conversions are prone to that .. the latest KEP exhaust headers I have has a slip joint in it ... about 5 inches of overlapping close fitting pipe , one inside the other. Instructions say very clearly ..............do not weld.. do not add brackets etc. so 'some give' is appropriate in some systems for sure.

hanging from the body though .. I'm still not in favor of that.

here's another example .....EZ3.0 6 cylinder engine in a Syncro Vanagon ...done by smallcar. They mount the engine using the stock ruber subaru engine moounts witn en under-engine cross bar.

at the rear...they have the stock vanagon rear engine mustache bar .. that's used to hold the muffler on ( there is a flex section too ) ..and for mounting the aft end of the skid plate to.

kinda clever. worst thing is you have to remove the skid plate to get the muffler off.. as the bolts at the back end of the skid plate are captured by the muffler. On all syncro's the muffler or skid plate will come off independently of each other .. but that's not all that bad.
