Not true Don. Jettas and Golfs and Diesel Rabbits have that bowl .. with spring clips to hold it against the manifold.....and that does allow engine movement without stressing the exhaust header pipe . but it's a 4 bolt flange on stock diesel vanagons. just look in your Bentley manual ..there's a picture of stock DV exhaust system.

There is a special tool for those spring clamps. there are also clever other tricks to deal with them. Anyone who owns one and is going to work on their vehicle with those spring clips should have the special tool. Kinda dangerous without it.

Man ... tons of ALH ( 1999 ) and later TDI engines have been installed more upright. It's not newish territory. I've been reading about those for maybe 10 years.

I think it's 'cheating' to not run a cat on a vehicle that came from the factory with one. Even a hollow cat looks more right and legal.
