Hey, all - this subject is almost a daily topic on the Samba. there may still be a source for halon and dispensors in their archives. initial investment is a little high compared to alternatives. halon works by completely overcoming oxygen instantly, as Scott verified.  *!* IF THE SITUATION ALLOWS -  I'll second his warning to shoot into intake grilles FIRST ...  and will add that gasoline vapors SINK. try to keep this in mind if you ever have occasion to use a dry type extinguisher. be prepared to send a second blast up under the bumper and or D pillar areas. then maybe down the intake again.  *!* IF THE SITUATION ALLOWS.  PRIMARY FOCUS - YOUR SAFETY !!  a sad fact of life that happens too frequently and I so very much hope no one should ever have to use this advice.    as Sir Ian wrote " Always have an exit strategy"      mike ________________________________ From: Scott Daniel - Turbovans <scottdaniel@TURBOVANS.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Sent: Sunday, December 16, 2012 9:53 PM Subject: Re: Fire!   Halon is 'magic'. Not sure you can get it anymore.. One instanteous shot from the halon .. all flames just 'disappeared' .. btw....*never* open the hood or engine cover for an engine fire , unless the fire is  still small! shoot through the ventsand intake grills. gotta watch the back end .. as least as often as the temp gauge ..on a vanagon that means about every 30 seconds, constantly. scott http://www.turbovans.com/ On 12/16/2012 6:12 PM, Dick Wong wrote: > Thank you everyone for your comments.????????????? > > I had not bought an extinguisher(s) yet.
