With my 5.25" speakers, I deleted the plastic grill ring, put speaker behind panel, rubber O rings between grill and panel, fastened with SS fasteners. Not certain if edge of cone is butted up against the panel or if cone hits grill at higher volume, but crank *just* clears the grill.
