I think your mechanic was being a bit zealous about the chain bag but it wouldn't hurt to move it elsewhere if you can find a place to put them. Regarding where people put things I think you'll find a hoge-poge of ways people organize things in their vans/campers. Unless you're an organization freak then you probably will find your own way of keeping things where you want them. You kind of have live in the van for a while to see what works for you. What works for one person may not work for another. You'll end up keeping things that you use more often at hand and the rest will be well hidden when you finally need them...
