Subject: Oil question....not the dreaded which motor oil is best....

I am getting ready for an 1100 mile blitz drive, PDX to the desert SW...taking the interstate because the weather and roads in the Sierras are snowy...

I did my pre-trip once over today and I couldn't find any in 15-40w oil except some that says 'hard service' and 'diesel service'...Delo I think the brand is. This went into my pretty high mileage inline VW ABA motor, a motor that has always burned a little oil...about a qt every 1000 miles now. I've been seeing a slow and slight increase in the oil consumption over the past couple of years, still have great oil pressure, so I am not worried but I wanted the 15-40 weight cause it uses less and I will be pushing a fully loaded (over loaded?) van over some big passes at 70 or so...

The oil marked 'diesel service' that won't blow me up, will it? Just curious as to what them might add to the oil that is marked like that, it says something to help keep the soot from damaging the internals of a diesel motor... I've put every imaginable grade and type of oil in this motor over the years...almost alway plain dino-oil, I think I have used this same brand diesel oil before, too.........thinner oil gives me lower oil pressure...but lower oil temps....For example, 5w 20w will lower my hot OP to about 50/555psi at 3700 rpm while I'll see a steady 60psi when hot with a 15-40 at the same rpm....

Anyway, curious if I am damaging my $300 motor by running diesel motor oil in it...anybody?
