California requires you to chain up on cloudy days! Kidding, Kidding...though they are very conservative with their highways and snow driving.... I was never, in over 25yrs of residency in Wyoming, told to chain up by any highway patrolman..and I always drove a 2wd pickup, even...or an aircooled bus.....Maybe they are more proactive on interstate 80 with making drivers chain up, but the chains don't help if you can see a foot in front of your car, which is what normally closes the roads in Wyoming....White-out!

They sometimes close the roads completely in the NW when black ice is the surface....I've encountered some of the very worst conditions driving there.....Seattle is particularly amusing after an ice storm.....vehicles sliding willy-nilly everywhere....and still people try to drive around....

It IS illegal to drive on some tires there....studded tires after a certain date....

What has this to do with Vanagons?.....Mine will work just OK on Nokians if I keep a couple of hundred lbs over the engine.....It won't go uphill in reverse....and driving the van in slippery conditions is exciting...Sitting as you do almost ahead of the front wheels, without much out front, you have to tune in to your body to 'feel' when you are crossed-up and sliding the rear end...but it does recover much better than most rear engined vehicles....
