215/65/16 is the tallest-widest you will get into the spare tire carrier and
that will require some effort. The standard load rating for this size is 98
and XL is 102. There are a lot of choices in this size. The slightly
shorter/wider 225/60-16 is a better choice for handling and is a very
common-popular size. Load indexes are 97or 98 standard and 101 or 102
reinforced.  This will not get into the tire carrier. Be careful with the
radial TA. Most are only rated for 35 psi making them inadequate for the
Vanagon. If using any non- XL or LT tire make sure it is rated for 44 psi.

I have Nokian 215 65 16 tires on the front of my van and on the rear I have
Uniroyal 215 75 16's  I like the rear size but they rub in the front during
braking turns.  I do not want to cut out my fenders.  I would like the same
size all around so I can have a spare that will work front or rear.
I'm thinking 215 70 16 maybe a radial TA  I want a high load rating a an
easier tire to find than  a continental or Nokian.  I have a 2 wd with  Go
Westy lift springs.  Hit me with suggestions.
