There is a very high mortality level from persons infected. Infection is mainly through inhalation, so if you have to handle a mouse, probably no problem, just wash. But please do not, repeat do not, clean up after mice, especially nests or soiled surfaces or items with a brush, broom, or other device that disturbs the feces or urine. Soak the material to be cleaned thoroughly with a solution of bleach and water, at least 10% bleach, so that nothing dry remains. Make a nest or other deposit look like it is part of a swamp. Let it stay for 30 minutes, then clean it up and dispose of everything, including the cleaning implements, in a sealed plastic bag (to protect sanitation workers who might handle the material). Hanta virus is not a joke. McNeely |
