If you go to a dealer or a shop they will usually include a pretty thorough inspection, including tires and brakes, looking for additional work, of course, but you might actually need it. The car will also be put up on a lift where inspections can be done right. Lube shops don't do brakes or thorough inspections, and can't from a lube pit anyway.

Here in central Oklahoma the posted price at just about any fast lube place is around $30-35. The same is true at Firestone and similar places. Ironically, dealers will change the oil for a little less, and my Toyota dealer offers much lower prices to "loyal customers." Of course, that is in hopes of selling up and selling additional services. But the other places offer "specials" through various mechanisms, so no one should pay full price if willing to use such services. But it is better to either go to a good independent shop (now pushing $50 for an oil change) or do it yourself.
At $4 per quart for oil, and another $4-10 dollars for a filter, a self change now costs $20-30. But, you know you did it right (or if you didn't, you are to blame, not the local minimum wage drug user.
