I have now owned Detlef, our 84 Westy since August of 2002. I bought it from the original owner who bought it new in October of 1983. He put 38,500 miles on it in almost 19 years & kept it in pristine condition, so much so, that when we were the 1st potential buyer to arrive to check it out in Sandy, Utah, he would not let us drive it, but would take us for a ride & tell us anything we wanted to know about it. Well, he did, we didn't quibble on the $8k he was asking for it, & it was ours! Since this was on a Saturday & I needed to go to my bank to get the $ to pay for it, I told him we would come back on Monday w/ the rest of the balance due, & he said no deposit needed, so on Monday we paid him & drove off after his parting words- "don't follow to closely behind other vehicles"! Of course the westy came w/ all receipts for all work done, all by the original VW Dealer, the orginal warranty for the clear coat sealer & undercoating, a porta potty, VW trailer hitch, etc. The German gent's 1st name was Detlef, so we named the Westy that in honor of him.

Mr. BZ-have since put over 120k miles on it, & it runs great on the original engine.
