We've taken the ferries both ways from Guymas and from La Paz....once to St Rosalia (half way down the Baja)...in general, it is a pretty well run service...We haven't crossed in perhaps 10yrs, but I think the same outfit still runs the boats. We've camped in the lots, waiting for the departures. You may (we have, since we learned about the option) be able to just stay in your vehicle during the trip...We once crossed in a camper, right next to a Mexican Grupo Musical (band) and had a heck of a party the whole way...We have also crossed as lounge passengers....sleeping where we could....our "could" found us in a vacant stateroom after paying a steward a cut rate fee... You may have to deal with the 'loading guy' in order to stay in your vehicle...

It can be a bit booked up during the high season...and in La Paz, the ticket agency was way downtown while the ferry dock was about 10k south of the city...Be aware that it IS Mexico and everything will work their way, not your US or Canadian way....just go with it...Yelling and bitching won't get you much except amused looks and perhaps a bit of pity at how uptight you are being...

I speak some traveler Spanish. Most of the ferry service can communicate with english speakers enough. Keep close watch on your stuff if you travel cabin class. Mexico is probably safer than Chicago or LA, but stealing does happen everywhere.
