I don't think a cat or dog could break a leg in a mouse trap. A rat trap, yes, but not a mouse trap. I have been snapped by a mouse trap many times. My finger hurt, but it wasn't injured beyond a trivial bruise. I would not want a child to get snapped, but not everyone has children around, or pets either for that matter. I put mouse traps along the wall in the garage in winter. Try as I might, I can't stop all the entrance places. My mice are not house mice, but instead are _Peromyscus_, known variously as white footed, white ankled, or deer mice depending on species. They only enter homes and outbuildings during cold weather.

Best thing you can do is seal the holes. >
