Scott, If you put a little thought into it, the firewall fuel fitting serves a very usefull purpose when it comes to removing and installing the engine. The fitting provides easy access for connecting/disconnecting the fuel line. No fishing around underneath, no raising and lowering the vehicle. From a factory floor assembly standpoint, it is a great feature. From a mechanic's standpoint, it WOULD be a great feature, if it were metal... One of the things I always liked about Vanagons, is that there is very little you need to access underneath to install/remove the engine. Cheers, Jeff
