It's a real fix.  On my '84 the mirrors would flatten against the
windows in high-speed wind gusts.  I went through the routine of
yanking the hex shaft out of its mounting and having to
cross-drill  and pin it, but of course the mirrors still slipped.  I
bought aftermarket mirrors which were just as bad from the get-go and
then I got serious about figuring out the originals.  Fixed them,
threw away the brand-new aftermarket ones, never looked back (in the
wrong direction) again.
