Push the lever to the right. If the air stops your flap seals are working reasonably. If you still get noticeable flow then they're on the way out. As a general principle, if they haven't been repaired already then they're undoubtedly on their last legs or close to it.

And in case you hadn't noticed, the dashboard vents can be shut off as well, by pushing the knurled knob on the side up or down firmly.
