There are 2 versions of the later metal shroud to match the 2 versions of the later fan motors.

There is no 3 speed fan motor, really. It is a larger single speed motor that VW wired up to a large external resistor to create 2 slower speeds to make a total of 3. Except in Syncro without A/C where they used a large resistor to create only 1 slower speed for a total of 2.

The smaller motor used in 82/83 diesel vans was also used in 83-91 wbx without factory A/C. It is built as a 2 speed unit internally.

The larger motor was used in 86+ with factory A/C and all Syncros.

The diameter of the motor is different as is the 3 bolt spacing that attaches it to the shroud. Thus the metal shroud is different between small motor and large motor.

The fan blade diameter is the same for both sizes of fan motor but the larger motor turns faster.

(82 DV uses a plastic shroud with the same small motor as later small motor models)
