wow .. If they're good condition, I don't find wbxr engine to be unreliable at all. they do have their quirks at times.. I've hadsay ....a 1.9 distributor with 200,000 miles on it need a new Hall Sensor. I can hardly call that 'unreliable'.

Sure the head gaskets don't last likeones doin engines that have 'real' head gaskets.. but that's manageable.

If people are having trouble keeping them running right ..it's only because the engine and fuel system are not being worked on someone competent. They work pretty darn good for what they are and are not a problem much at all when properly understood and cared for.

jeez ..I work on them constantly. I had to finally break down and buy ONE rebuilt AFM fora 1.9 from Phython last year. . Like the first one in years and years. And I've gotten 21 mpg on the highway with a properly maintained 1.9 wbxr engine in an 85 Westy, and that's with hitting 80 going downhill passing big trucks even.

I do other types of engines too forsure .. Waterboxers could have more power ........the could have a more evolved EFI system .. and they could have a 'real' head gasket system ..they are just a converted air-cooled design after all... butyou'll also never have a timing belt fail and blow up the engine either.

I would say ..just like the van itself ..they need good care and understanding . For its era, their fuel system is not bad at all actually, IMO. It's mainly that a lot of people don't understand them well or know how to fix them right. And they are not that hard to fix usually.
