It was your link that did not work for me. But direct link did - man that is grotty. Bentley specifies the number of rubber washers to put on bolts on rear edge of rack. If I recall correctly it is double on all. But does not (well, I might have missed it) specify of any should be between rack and side brackets. I seem to recall there was one on side bracket on my '82 westy. The rear washers help in kicking up rear of rack to seal better to pop top and perhaps to give a little side drainage? Also, on my '82, there were rubber/foam pads on inside of rack near the rear.

I have to add though that seeing as my van is a pop top conversion, I may not have achieved the correct pressure on the rack (mount placements and rubber washer count) that might have contributed to the problem. I know that my '82 westy had no such rubbing problems. > > Ah ok. Good point. > > FWIW, on my '81, there's an extra grommet at the four 10mm head bolts > at rear edge. The rubber and bulb is of high quality, looks more like factory than any aftermarket seals I have seen. It came preloaded with sealant deep in the groove. > > > I'm sure the VC stuff is fine too.
