I used to go to Corpus Christie a lot back in the 80's when my parents retired there. Wasn't it Mustang Island that was a drive on beach? Can't remember, it has been a long time. As I recall, the san d was pretty hard packed, we used to drive on it in a VW squareback, and on rare occasions in my dad's 1977 Chrysler Cordoba (yes, with the fine C orinthian leather!). Thats not to say you couldn't get stuck out there, especially if you wandered too far off the main drive. Used to see a lot of seriously rusted out cars (mainly 70's vintage)  in Corpus Christie from driving out on the beach!!
