Rob, I just stuck them up with no shade (aluminum angle/channel or the like). The sideways light spill is not great so that the beam on the kitchen side is predominantly downwards onto cabinets. The strip on the sliding door valence is pointed more to the horizontal so that one does shine into your eyes. But I wanted light in that direction, and that is why I wired in 2 controllers. Unfortunately I smoked one of the controllers so until I get a new one both strips are driven from one controller. The controllers do dim down nicely. They also have flashing settings (good to induce fits) and a lame "candle flicker" setting which I had high hopes for but turns out to be a little annoying :) cheers alistair
